‘The God of Small Things’ by Arundhati Roy 🌴  I knew about this one since long. It was lurking in my Kindle TBR since long. But when an illuminated English Professor who my husband interacted with at an event could not stop gushing over it, I had to pick it up. 🌴  But the review starts with a trigger warning - it is darker than what you are ready for. Period. With an evil foreboding building up since the start, reading this novel was like beginning to watch a horror movie, where more than the scares, the anticipation of scares keeps you scared. Violence, casteist abuse, (Spoiler Alert) sex, pedophilia and incest - in a degree more raw and thorough than you are ready for. Fun Fact! In the political times that it was released, it was not only accused of being anti-communist but the central love affair was alleged to be obscene for which Ms Roy had to face a long and arduous litigation, which might have gone on for an eternity had her Booker win not convinced the judge otherwise.  "चौदह फेरे" शिवानी द्वारा  📚  शिवानी की लेखन विधि में उपन्यास को मैं उनका श्रेष्ठतम कौशल कहूँगी। इस विधा की शिवानी कृतियां मुझे सबसे प्रिय हैं। इसलिए अपना वार्षिक किताबी लक्ष्य ख़तम करके "लैज़र रीडिंग" हित मैंने अनायास ही शिवानी जी के दो उपन्यास उठा लिए| इस साल गल्प अधिक पढ़ लेने के कारण मेरी अगली कोशिश होगी कुछ नॉन-फिक्शन पढ़ने की।  📚  बहरहाल, "चौदह फेरे" की बात करते हुए बताना चाहूंगी कि यह कृति पहले-पहल उपन्यास रूप में प्रकाशित न होकर 'धर्मयुग' साप्ताहिक पत्रिका में लड़ीवार रूप में छपी थी। किताब के शुरू में मृणाल पण्डे द्वारा दिए परिचय ज़ाहिर करता है कि यह श्रृंखला उस समय के पाठकगणों में इतनी लोकप्रिय हो गई कि कहानी की नायिका अहल्या के भविष्य को लेकर अक्सर ही कॉलेज छात्राओं और गृहिणियों द्वारा अनुमान और कयास लगाए जाते थे। लेखनी में लोकतंत्र के एक अनूठे प्रदर्शन की मिसाल यह है की मृणाल द्वारा शिवानी जी को पाठकों की इच्छा से मुखातिब करवाते हुए उन्ही ने कहानी को दुखांत के बदले सुखांत से संपन्न करने का विनय किया था, जो (स्पॉइलर अलर्ट!) लेखिका ने माना भ

  "अतिथि" शिवानी द्वारा ft. शरद की शर्मीली शाम  🍁 अक्टूबर का पतझड़ी मास आधे से ज़्यादा गुज़र चुका है और मेरी एलेक्सा पर एंडी विलियम्स निरंतर बज रहा है। शायद पतझड़ के मौसम की लाल उदासी ही उसे खूबसूरत बनाती है। भारतीय त्योहारों के मौसम का पाश्चात्य हैलोवीन और फॉल से मिलन अटपटा लग सकता है, पर बेमेल कभी नहीं। मैं हर मौसम, हर अनुभूति मनाने का लोभ संवरण नहीं कर पाती। जैसे शिवानी के इस उपन्यास के किरदार - भिन्न पर बेमेल नहीं लगते, जिगसॉ के टुकड़ों जैसे अन्तः साथ आकर कहानी संपूर्ण कर ही जाते हैं। 🍁 अतिथि एक नारी-केंद्रित कहानी है। कहानी की नायिका जया अंडरडॉग थीम की लीक पर एक अत्यंत अमीर और राजनीतिक खानदान के बिगड़े सुदर्शन पुत्र कार्तिक का रिश्ता पा जाती है। महत्वकांक्षी जया के साथ ऐसा क्या घटता है की ऐसी स्थिति के बाद भी उसका संघर्ष जारी रहता है, यही कहानी है। 🍁 कहानी कहीं आपको सास-बहू धारावाहिक की कमी पूरी करती नज़र आएगी और कभी नारी-प्रधान पुट पर चलती। कहानी के कुछ प्रसंग मुझे मेरे प्रिय पाकिस्तानी धारावाहिक जिसे मैंने काफी वर्ष पहले देखा था की याद दिला गए - नाम नहीं लूंगी और अंदाज़ लगा

  (19 of 2021) 📚  "वातायन" शिवानी द्वारा (लेख एवं संस्मरण) 📚  अर्थ जानने हित 'वातायन' को अगर अंग्रेजी में अनुदित किआ जाये तो इसे वेंटिलेशन (ventilation) कहेंगे। राधाकृष्ण प्रकाशन द्वारा प्रकाशित वातायन लखनऊ के दैनिक समाचारपत्र "स्वतंत्र भारत" में शिवानी द्वारा लिखे 28 निबंधों का संग्रह है। अंत में बोनस रूप में 'हे धूर्जटेः पशुपते!' नाम से नेपाल के पशुपतिनाथ मंदिर का एक यात्रा वृत्तांत भी मिलेगा। 📚  यह संग्रह पढ़ने के बाद एक बात स्पष्ट हो जाती है - शिवानी जी जितना कौशल कथा/उपन्यास विधा में रखती हैं, उतनी ही रोज़मर्रा के सामाजिक और राजनीतिक मुद्दों को लेकर उनकी सोच पैनी और सटीक है। भारत के दक्षिणी शहर बंगलुरु की खूबसूरती को जहाँ शिवानी बड़े प्रेम से बयां करती हैं, वहीँ लुप्त होते बाज़ीगरी, नट, सपेरों और कठपुतली के खेलों के प्रति उनका मोह हमें भी उदास कर जाता है। देश में बढ़ती अराजकता, कानून व्यवस्था से असंतोष, सेवानिवृत्ति पश्चात् आला अफसरों का लालफ़ीताशाही और भ्रष्टाचार से सामना - कुछ ऐसे मुद्दे भी छेड़े गए हैं जो आधी सदी बाद भी उतने ही वैध और प्रासंगिक ल

I am talking about Robin Sharma and the Monk Who Sold His Ferrari. 😉 When it comes to life lessons, this book is way more realistic and way less cringe.   (17 of 2021) 📚 'Modern Romance' by Aziz Ansari 📚 Well, here's is how the flowchart for this one goes- About to start Dating? Read it. No? Dating already? Read it.  No? In a relation and going/not going steady? Read it.  Married already? Read it.  Past marriage and all the social shenanigans? Still Read It!  📚  Aziz has taken a very detailed and entertaining tour of the modern love and dating scenario. This book compiles everything related to romance under the sun - from asking for that first date to Online Dating AKA swipe left-right scenario (well, in a country where Conscription isn't mandatory, that's the only Left and Right we do).  Not only that, it does your handholding into old school issues even when you've found your the One or getting in and out (ugh, not a euphemism) of relations (see!) - Sexting, Cheating, Snooping and Break ups (Jerk Trap : it even has a chapter on breaking up over Phone Calls and Texts (You Gen Z You 🙄)).   (16 of 2021) 📚  'स्वयंसिद्धा' शिवानी द्वारा 📚 राधाकृष्ण पेपरबैक्स द्वारा प्रकाशित 'स्वयंसिद्धा' 6 लघुकथाओं - स्वयंसिद्धा, अभिनय, कौन, गैंडा, बदला और दर्पण - का संग्रह है. यह किताब शिवानी द्वारा कृत शृंखला की इस साल की मेरी पांचवीं किताब है. ज़ाहिर है, इतने ओवर-एक्सपोज़र से एक समय पर मन भरने या मोहभंग जैसी स्थिति बनने लगती है. कहीं-कहीं शिवानी जी की रूढ़िवादी सोच ने भी आहत किया है. परंतु इस किताब ने मुझे फिर स्मरण करवा दिया - कि मैं ने क्यूं शिवानी जी को पढ़ना शुरू किया था. 📚 ना इस किताब में आपको 'कस्तूरी मृग' में वर्णित पहाड़ और वनस्पतियां मिलेंगी, और ना ही 'भैरवी' जैसा भारतीय आध्यात्म का मंगलगान. सारी कहानियां बड़ी तरोताज़ा और नवीन हैं - मॉडर्न भी कह सकते हैं. 📚 जहां 'स्वयंसिद्धा' एक विख्यात अविवाहित प्रौढ़ा प्रशासनिक अधिकारी माधवी की कहानी है, वहीं 'अभिनय' दिलफेंक शेखर और भोली जिवंती का प्रेमप्रसंग.  'कौन' कुछ ऐसे बेनाम रिश्तों की बात कहती है जिन्हें सामाजिक स्वीकृति ना मिलने पर भी वह प्रासंगिक और प्रिय रहते हैं, चाहे समय

  15.2 of 2021 📚  'The Overcoat' by Nikolai Gogol - If you have read my last review, then you would know from where this Short Story came into the picture. Dostoevsky might believe that "We all came out of Gogol's 'Overcoat'", but Gogol's Overcoat came to me out of Ashoke's life story.  🧥 Akaky Akakievich Bashmachkin is a poor Copying Clerk, but depsite his low-paid conditions and a lukewarm social life, he is a happy man. (15 of 2021) 📚 'The Namesake' by Jhumpa Lahiri - "For being a foreigner, Ashima is beginning to realize, is a sort of lifelong pregnancy—a perpetual wait, a constant burden, a continuous feeling out of sorts." - the best phrase to summarise the book. 📚 As I hail from Doaba - the 'phoren' crazy land of Punjab, the lives of the acquaintances sprinkled far and wide on the world map has always been intriguing. The Scary Photosession 📚 You know you're doing well in marriage when husband goes to Simla for work and doesnt forget to get you a book. From competing with my Kindle for attention to encouraging my romance with mountain-horror (yes it's a genre and I made it! 🙄), I think hubby dear has come a long way. 🧿 📚 Coming to the book, Gin and Tonic might do it for many, but Hills and Horror is my fav cocktail. As this one claims to be based on true hauntings, it stimulated me even more. (11 of 2021) 📚 Pachinko by Min Jin Lee 📚 At the cost of repetition, nonfiction is macros for me, fiction is micros. Community vs individual. Statistics vs emotions. Call me partial, but latter is what I enjoy. Pachinko is a story of four such generations of Koreans who migrate to Japan during the Second World War. 📚 Starting from Yangjin and Hoonie giving birth to Sunja in Yeongdo, Korea and her journey to Osaka, Japan, the story transcends through the life of her children Noa and Mozasu and ends at the fourth generation represented by Solomon. 📚 It was a long winded novel spanning over 79 years. It had to. Because it represents how the feelings towards motherland change with the passage of time and change in political and economic status. Where Yangjin never accepts Japan as her own, Solomon can never dream of embracing Korea. (10 of 2021) 📚 'Don't Lose Your Mind, Lose Your Weight' by Rujuta Diwekar #latepost 📚 If you regularly follow my posts, you must remember I posted about 'The Mindful Diet' last year. This book is a smarter and practical version of it, because as Rujuta Diwekar's dieting school goes, (i) it talks in terms of your genetic makeup, and rather than eating fancy super foods, it talks about why you should stick to the meal that your nans and grans promoted, and (ii) for a mean-but-not-lean Punjabi like me,  (and it's a big deal - because I've tried most of the (free and not so free) diet plans on the market which talk sh*t challenging your sanity) it won't stop you from consuming Ghee or dairy. 📚 The best thing about RD and this book is - it won't make tall promises and it simplifies eating for you. (9 of 2021) 📚  'भैरवी' शिवानी द्वारा ft. रूढ़िवादी मानसिकता  📚 शिवानी 'गौरा' पंत मेरी पसंदीदा लेखिकाओं में से एक हैं। उनकी कहानियों में व्याप्त सादगी और पहाड़ी जीवन का पुट, ख़ासकर आजकल की लेखनी में, सहज ही देखने नहीं मिलता। परन्तु, चाहे तुच्छ ही सही, एक समीक्षक होने के नाते किसी रचना में दिखे दोषों की बात करना भी उतना ही ज़रूरी है जितना कि उसके गुणों का। इन्ही  की कृतियों की समीक्षा की श्रृंखला में इस बार की पुस्तक है भैरवी। 122 पृष्ठों में अपनी कहानी कहने वाली इस पुस्तिका को नावेल के बजाय नावलेट कहना उचित होगा।  📚 भैरवी कहानी है चन्दन की - जिसका (लेखिका की नज़र में) अभूतपूर्व सौंदर्य ही उसका एकमात्र गुण है। कैसे यह सुंदरता उसे सफलता के चरम सोपान से लेकर पीड़ा के गर्त तक ले जाती है, कहानी इसी बारे में है। शाहजहांपुर में पली-बढ़ी चन्दन का अल्मोड़ा से धारचूला और फिर महानगरी तक का सफर बड़े मनोरंजक ढंग से बयान किआ गया है, पर उसके बाद, शाही ठाठबाठ से सन्यासिनी बनने की कहानी ये सोचने पर मजबूर करती है की क्यों कई बार समाज की कुरूपता का खामियाज़ा एक स्त्री को भुगतना पड़ता ह

(8 of 2021) 📚 ‘Interpreter of Maladies’ by Jhumpa Lahiri 📚 Some books are like a car crash, where you sit in the car, revv up the engine, speeding through the tortuous story climaxing in a resounding crash. This is not one of those. It reminds me of nostalgic train journeys, punctuated with passengers boarding and de-boarding, hawkers selling their wares, beggars, clown-faced circus troupes, garrulous aunties and card-playing uncles keeping you entertained, till your station arrives and you get down, bearing those trifling experiences with you for a long time. The door needs not to be knocked down every time for an entry into the heart. 📚 Interpreter of Maladies (1999) is a collection of nine short stories by Jhumpa Lahiri. (4 of 2021) ft. my Morning wali Chai Shireen  📚  ‘The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul’ by Deborah Rodriguez - This is my last book from the trilogy of Central Asian themed books that I ordered last year. The book is based in Afghanistan and is a self-proclaimed Khaled Hosseini inspired Feminist war drama. 🏔️ It is a story of 5 female characters - Sunny, Yazmina, Isabel, Candace and Halajan who are of different age groups and hail from different ethnic, cultural and financial backgrounds. All of them carry their own skeletons in the cupboard, but how they affect and enrich the lives of each other in a war torn and Taliban ruled Kabul is the pivotal plot.  👩🏻‍🦰👩🏻‍🦳👩🏻‍🦱👵🏼👩🏽 Coming to the review, do not expect the narration to have depth and detail of a deft writer.
